I can reproduce the issue inside a VirtualBox machine (host Windows XP SP3 32 bit, guest XP SP3 32 bit) without the printer. You don't need a Lexmark printer. Just download the drivers: http://downloads.lexmark.com/downloads/cpd/CJXP600LE.exe Use the Add Hardware wizard to add a printer connected to COM1, by manual installation from list, selecting custom drivers (the Have disk button). Download and extract the ESCD.DOC from ftp://ftp.microsoft.com//developr/drg/ Plug-and-Play/Pnpspecs/ESCD.EXE. Open the .doc file and you'll receive the same error, without requiring you to print anything.
