They are designed to support mathematical and technical text and contain the glyphs requested here in the issue tracker. OOo developers can concentrate on providing easy access to the glyphs, but need no longer to design glyphs. The current OpenSymbol font should be delivered in addition to get the glyphs from the private area which are used in existing formulas. But new formulas can use STIX fonts.
