------- Additional comments from duncanjmar...@openoffice.org Tue Nov 23 19:11:01 +0000 2010 ------- SUMMARY - Open Office sometimes won't open - OO sometimes won't open files created in OO - OO sometimes seems to keep running in the background when I've closed all the files I've been working on DETAILS I have just installed Open Office 3.2 on a brand new Dell Inspiron 5030 laptop and it's not working properly. (By the way, I don't know what Subcomponent above means, so I may not have picked the right option.) The laptop had MS office already installed but I have reset the 'Open With' option for all relevant file types to be opened with OO. When I reboot, OO works fine. However, once I have worked on and closed a few spreadsheets (the number seems to vary), OO seems to freeze. It won't open when I click on the icon - and no files will open either. The same occurs whether I double click on the icon (or file name) or right click and select OPEN. When this happens, Task Manager shows multiple instances of soffice.bin, soffice.exe and scalc.exe. I've seen as many as 7 or 8 of each. That doesn't seem right to me. [Is it relevant that I often open as many as 4 or 5 files at once (to facilitate data transfer)? But I've been doing that in OO for years! And all the files in question were produced in OO on my old laptop.] The same happens with text files - except that multiple instances of swriter.exe replaces scalc.exe. Restarting my laptop resolves it - BUT when I try to do so, a window opens warning me to shut down 'background programmes' (which I cannot do as I can't see any running) so I have to force a shutdown. I shouldn't be having to this several times an hour!
