Excel does not use merged cells when it calculates automatic row heights. You will see the effect too when you do the same directly in Excel: - Insert multi-line text into cell A1 -> Excel expads row 1. - Merge A1 with B1 -> Excel shrinks row 1 to one line of text, ignoring the multi-line contents.
