I had already done some research in the mailing lists and found similar problems but nothing useful for my issue. Maybe the problem was that I was editing in OO Writer a MS Word document, which has English as the default language. If I copy and paste text in Italian from such Word documents into a new OO Writer document then the spelling checker works. Well, not always actually, sometimes the settings still go back to English by themselves but sooner or later I may manage to figure out the trick for this too.
