To replicate the problem, change the number format of an unprotected column cell to currency (for example cell G3). After the change delete the content of the cell (Make sure to delete the currency sign as well. The Euro symbol in my case.) Type a letter, for example "a" and delete it again. Now type a number again and the number format has automatically changed to number.
