There is probably only one font named Symbol on your system: An X11 bitmap font.
Maybe it is non-scalable so it has to be rescaled, which looks ugly for a bitmap
font.

Despite the problem with the uglieness of the font on the display what would be
the best solution? The consensus here is, that if a document requests font X and
there is only one font X available for the display then it should be used, even
if it is just a X11 bitmap font... PDF export and printing don't have this
problem because "Symbol" is available as builtin font there. Unfortunately it is
not possible for an application to request the glyph outlines of a printer
builtin font.

Workarounds for the problem are to install a nice scalable version of the font
or to use a better looking font alternative in the document (e.g. "Standard
Symbols L"). Maybe we could also change the heuristic to use a different font if
one is available though this will certainly result in defect reports of the kind
"I requested font X and X is available but the stupid application uses Y"...
