We don't want a "quick and dirty" kind of solution. It might be possible
to set the compatibility flag based on the document type but it would
be much better to have an official flag registered with a module showing
the user in which mode he's working in and allowing him to choose. I see
no problems in doing this later as the Basic storage inside document is
not part of the Oasis specification.
Not breaking old programs is a minimum requirement but as a Basic pro-
grammer I also wouldn't be very amused if anyone changed the default
hehaviour for new programs underhand without even telling me or docu-
menting the changes.
