Yes, "Use automatic font color for screen display" was the culprit. Thanks.   
Sorry for my bad query. Will try harder to locate issues before shooting  
next time..  
 
A question remains: why is this "strange" behavior default, and can I get rid  
of it system wide?  
  
Depending on your answer (if any), I may enter a wishlist entry for changing 
this IMO wrong default..  
 
Since it's obviously not a bug, but a design decision, I wanted to set the 
state of it to INVALID, but didn't found any way to do so :-(.
