I don't think you're right in this point. Esp. people dealing with accented
characters on a daily basis will not appreciate a system where every application
has to be configured individually, with different functionality and with
different keys available.

I don't understand why so many people think that it should be the job of an
application to configure the keyboard.

No the best way is to use a natural way of getting the character. One example is
a compose sequence, a standard in unix/X world. e.g. the letter ø: you can
clearly tell that it is a combination of "o" and "/", so just press <compose>,
o, / and you'll get the character. Similar (but far mor common): é - a
combination of "e" and the accent "´". Non-US-keyboard layouts will most likely
have dead-keys activated, that is you press the accent-key (nothing will happen
at this point of time) and then the e -> now the é is inserted.
Yet another and very easy to use method is a modifyer key, "altGr", e.g. to
enter "æ" you can press <modifier>+a. Or just press <modifier>+y and you'll get
the yen-mark.

Furthermore there are many applets that can be configured to show a selection of
special characters that can be pasted into the document.

This works in every application and doesn't need to be reconfigured everytime
and for each application. Configure once and use everywhere.

Considering your "real world" example in the first post: If you don't manage to
use one of the various methods listed above for insertion of characters, why do
you believe that yet another implementation inside OOo could be any better?

> [Font-problems]

What you describe is a totally different problem and cannot be solved by
insertion-addons. If you don't have a font installed that includes the glyphs
used in the document, there's nothing OOo can do about that. And you cannot
force other not to use "seldomly found" characters.

According to sba's comment (won't be done by Sun-engineers in foreseeable
future), I resolve this issue "worksforme" and set the OOoPlesaehelp-target so
that volunteers can search for it more easily.

My POV is: This is a thing that has to be done for the whole desktop, for all
applications and not by OOo. There are already many methods for inputting text
available (small helper-programs or standard input features) that accomplish
this task. An implementation within OOo will never be good enough for everybody
(the complaints will never stop) and IMHO not worth the effort.

You basically are asking for an easier way to configure your system's
keyboard-layout/input-methods.
