Double click on the captions frame and in the tba page named "Type" of the dialog choose "automatic" as setting for the width. Now, outside the caption (and any other frame) enter the formula you like to have. Select the formula in the caption and delete it. You can now cut-copy-paste the formula you like to have from the outside to the inside of the caption. Add a paragraph break after the formula.
