What is the problem with windows? ghostscript exists for windows, ImageMagick (=convert) exists for windows and even pstoedit is available for windows. So the exact same mechanism is used on linux and windows. This solution is cross-platform and is working fine. IMHO the helper-programs should /always/ be used, not only if there is no preview available.
