All you need to do is go to calc and put anything in a cell then go to that cell and record a macro say change text colour to red. Now go to a different cell enter data and see if the macro will run. Changing the text colour won't work likewise with trying to centre text but if I record a macro to make text bold that works. Now if you can get that to work there must be something wrong with my OOo setup on Windows Xp pro. I have Java 2 Standard edition version 1.5.0_2-b09 installed.
