It is a general case only on local windows machine. The case when an nfs or a samba volume is mounted on a windows machine one of the most common for enterprize users. I agree that this will not happen for a user who uses his windows machine offline, but that does not mean that we should not care about it. By the way, please read my previous comment carefully, the suggestion about using case insencitive pattern is already there as the second alternative.
