It doesn't need to know.

the -q (quiet) switch is present in 0.8 as well.
It doesn't make any difference for 0.8

The problem is that in versin 0.9 and 0.10 the warning message was moved from
"only when verbose is turned on" to "display the warning in standard mode".

In all versions you can suppress these notification-messages with -q

regarding dpkg - I did not have a look at those yet. But if it is only possible
to trigger the other way round, then we have a problem (the application-packages
would have to be modified). You cannot easily add triggers or package-format
specific stuff into an epm-created package.
It is possible to add a postinstall / postuninstall skript that is dependant on
the packageformat. But you'd have to copy that script to every application 
package.
