Even if I have multiple embedded objects in some kind (I dont know this for sure, because its an old document from StarOffice 5.2 ported over OpenOffice 1 and 1.1.4, now to 1.9.m118), my suggestion is to hide this flickering for every object from the user. I'm in computer science and even me puzzels this sort of behaviour. What will it be to "normal" users.
