Of course ods is smaller, because of the zip-compression, Ooo does. But for the same reason, the loading takes longer, because of the unzipping. It has to unzip the full file to the memory, you can not locate parts of files in the zip-Archive. Excel has a binary file-format and can access the data quicker, but the files are larger.
