First is in Tools->Options->Language Settings->Languages and second is in Format->Character. After one changes the Tools->Options->... part, the span/character properties do not change, and since they are closer to the text, they prevail. The solution would be to mark the document and set Format->Character->Language to "English UK". Like that the right language is used for spellchecking.
