Ah, I think I know what the problem is now. Coming to think of it, I vaugely
remember having the same problem in OpenOffice 1.1 when I was using Fedora Core
2, but not on my Windows 98 version (before Win98 died). I get:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

So, presumably, the FC build of Openoffice has been set so that FC's default
language settings over-ride anything you attempt to set within OpenOffice? If
so:

1) How do I change it? (Fedora Core's a pain to persuade that you're not
American, no matter how many times you select the "English (UK)" options.)

2) It seems to me that the outstanding issue is that, in the FC build, the "Set
as default language" box is an obsolete setting that doesn't actually do
anything, but confuses people like me into thinking it does. Should the option
in the FC build be removed and replaced with a message that default language is
set by the operating system? (Or is that issue Fedora's resonsibility and not
yours?)
