The same mis-alignment occurs with formulas in footnotes using e.g. A sub 1 and
b sub 1 sup 2. Also after scaling to the surrounding text. In my case footnotes
have point size 10 so I use size 10 {A sub 1} and size 10 { b sub 1 sup 2.
