In OO 2.0 it's much better - I can select the text and choose "Format/Default
Formatting" to get rid of pre-existing links.

BTW, the suggestion about turning off the URL recognition is useful, but a bit
off-topic. It won't help if a user wants to remove an existing hyperlink.

In OO 1.1 it's extremely frustrating - the conversion from ordinary text to URL
is irreversible, one can only select the URL, call the URL edit dialog box, copy
the text, close the dialog, paste somewhere near, then delete the URL....

However, the current "Default Formatting" is not intuitive for some users, too.

Many users expect to simply right-click on the URL, and find the "Remove
hyperlink" command there (or maybe "convert hyperlink to text"?).
