Apologies for not realising that stating on installation that OpenOffice was to
handle MSWord documents was not sufficient to make OpenOffice handle OLE
requests for MSWord elements. However, setting 'L' doesn't fix the problem. The
table remains unreadable.

To make it visible, I have to do the following.

Double click on table.

Edit -> Select All -> Table -> Convert -> Table to Text.

Edit -> Select All, then Tahoma 320 in the Tool Bar.

Edit -> Select All -> Table -> Convert -> Text to Table.

Click outside edit area, single click the table, and stretch it downwards as far
as it can go.

The text can now be read; it occupies a small area at the top of the object.

Surely this is not right!?
