Cohan makes a good point. The structures we build for gardens seldom represent our LOCAL geology.

The first place I saw a planting like the one in Dave's Harlow Carr pictures was Harry Jans house in Loenen, in the Netherlands. If good fences make good neighbors, Harry had it down pat. BOTH sides of his wall were planted--and beautifully.
