Hi,
I have an SB Live! 5.1, and I have noticed that there is now a
tendency for ALSA to create a really high-pitched screeching sound out
of my speakers. I am using the version of ALSA checked out of CVS
today, but this problem goes back several weeks.
The simplest way to do demonstrate this (for me) is to unmute the
"Mic-Boost" option in alsamixer, regardless of whether the Mic is
muted or not.
The second way is to raise the volume on my speakers, although not to
what I might call "excessively loud". It's become a delicate juggling
act between hearing the sound played and being deafened by the banshee
scream. This was particularly problematic today because I tried to
record a 16 bit WAV file through the SB Live! with arecord. The sound
that came out was *WAY* too quiet, I couldn't use the "Mic Boost", and
if I tried to raise the volume on my speakers then I was deafened by
the screeching.
Does anyone have an idea what this might be? I have successfully
recorded WAV files with ALSA before (Jun 13th 2001 to be precise).
Thanks for any pointers here,
Cheers,
Chris
