I've been hacking on esound to 'scratch and itch' as they say. That itch being alsa support. It'll compile with alsa 0.9 natively. Because I use this as my sound server I also made sure it has any improvements I can find, such as the patches from the Mandrake, RedHat, and Debian distributions, for instance. I have patches for it at http://webpages.charter.net/tprado/esound if you're interested.
