A final word for those that might encounter the same issue: Yep, you were right, it was all nVidia's driver fault: Upgraded to beta driver 304.22, and I have HDMI audio again. >From their Changelog for 304.22: "Fixed a bug that caused audio over HDMI to not work after restarting the X server on some MCP7x (IGP) GPUs."
