I was messing around with my two Schiits on the old beater Core Duo
mentioned below this morning and I learned something interesting (at least
I think it's interesting):

The problem with only seeing 44100 and 48000 seems to be related to the USB
port on the computer.  On the top front of the computer there are two USB
ports, side by side.  One only gives 44100 and 48000 and when connected I
see the following message stream in syslog:

Note that a lot of unhappy-sounding messages seen on the left port are not
seen on the right, such as the complaint about the cable, the device
descriptor read errors and so on.

So I guess I am concluding that either there is a hardware fault in the
right port or cabling or perhaps it's some kind of a lower-speed connection.

Anyway, seems that I can resolve this matter just by plugging into the
leftmost port.
