  The problem was, that it wasn't marked as "muted" (MM), and - besides -
that slider is shown only by the alsamixer, and not by any other. And even
alsamixer gave no possibility to unmute that simply by pressing a key
(alsamixer v1.0).

  But I found appropriate entry in /etc/asound.state ("Tone Control -
Switch"), and changed it's value from 'false' to 'true'.

  I found, that one should very carefully slide "Bass" control, because
it's very easy to spoil the sound - it begins to "rattle". But I've got a
feeling, that it's not my fault by "overbassing" the sound - I'm not 100%
sure, but the old emu10k1 drivers from opensource.creative.com (the ones
with tone controls enabled - released about a year ago) had somewhat
better tone control settings, which allows to more precise bass level
control, free of such unpleasant effect. I'm afraid, that distortion is
made by the (not quite properly set by current drivers) card's
electronics, not in the speakers (with too much bass).

But perhaps I'm wrong - didn't made direct comparison with old drivers
