LM 8.1 uses devfs after a standard installation. Maybe that is the problem?
According to the INSTALL file in the alsa-driver 0.5.11 directory you don't
use the ./snddevices script but edit the /etc/devfsd.conf file when using
devfs. Or you can decide not to use devfs in LM8.1 .
Btw, LM8.1 has installed the ALSA 0.5.11 drivers to your HDD, there are
also ALSA lib and utils .rpm's on the CD's.

I use LM8.1 with KDE: K -> Multi Media -> Sound -> Sound Mixer.
