I used to had a same problem, and the cause was incompatibilty between SB-Live and VIA IDE's DMA. Disabling DMA on hdc (suprisingly hdd had no effect) fixed it (but caused higher load and latency). The board (MSI K7T-Pro) fscked up about 3 weeks ago, I bought a Elitegroup K7S5A (SiS chipset) and the problem vanished.
BTW MSI support and linux' via-ide maintainer both recommended buying a
stronger power supply, though I really doubt it whould have changed anything.
