OK, I have PCM sound working again. More out of frustration than anything else, I cranked up alsamixer, muted everything, then unmuted everything, and suddenly I was getting PCM sound again. Several reboots later, it's still going.
It begins to seem that something in my sound card is not being initialised correctly. Don't know why nobody else has seen this problem, but I think it's time I delved into how the cs46xx driver works.
