There were some problems compiling the ALSA 0.9.0beta12 drivers with
Mandrake 8.2. However, the Mandrake 8.2 installer updates packages via the
internet as part of the install process. I haven't updated packages after
installing some weeks ago since I only have a 28Kb modem :( When did you
install/update Mandrake 8.2?

I think you haven't installed the 'devel' library. HTH,
