Which soundcard do you have? If you've got a snd-<foo>-synth module loaded, then chances are it has an onboard synth and you can play them through that using pmidi: http://www.parabola.demon.co.uk/alsa/pmidi.html (Note that you'll also need to load a soundfont using the sbiload program from the alsa-tools package.)
