I've got an SB Live! 1024 here and MIDI synth works fine... (0.9.10)
You need to load a .sf2 soundfont with sfxload (I use sfxload -i
/path/to/my/font.sf2).  Does "sfxload -M" report any memory used?  (It
should probably show 128MB - size-of-soundfont)
