Use alsactl from the alsa-utils package. See 'man alsactl'.
One way to automate things is adding the lines
post-install snd-<cardname> alsactl restore
pre-remove snd-<cardname> alsactl store
to your /etc/modules.conf. See 'man modules.conf' :) HTH,
