Thanks to everyone who replied. I _did_ have the sound unmuted in alsamixer, but... about five minutes after I'd posted the question I ran aumix, just out of curiosity, and found that it had all sound levels at zero, apparently overriding(?) the alsamixer settings. Oh well...
