Chris, I got the sound with arecord.
I played around with alsamixer and also checked which was Mic hole and which is the line-in hole with trial and error and things were fine. amixer ( or it menu-based clone alsamixer ) can be used to select from where you want to capture like Mic or Line-In or ... and other things.
