I've played with linux for a long time and I've never got the urge to make
sound work .. but lately the urge has arrived and I've been attempting to
get my Dell Optiplex GX1 (CS4236) running Debian Woody with 2.4.20 kernel
working with alsa (rc5 from unstable distro).

I've got the CD working fine, and the mixer volume for the cd works, but I
don't seem to have any master volume or balance control. My assumption is
that the control marked IGain in Kmix should be master volume and the bottom
horizontal slider is balance .. are those bad assumptions? I've tried a
couple of mixers, and all seem similar.

One thing I did notice after perusing the source a bit is that it appears
that my hardware isn't being properly detected by the cs4236 driver ..
isapnp reports an ID that matches an ID in cs4236.c, but I would have
expected /proc/asound/sndstat to show the "Dell Optiplex GX1" string I see
in the source somewhere. Also note the "NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG" stuff in
sndstat. How can I determine if the hardware is being detected correctly?

...

Update .. got sick of CS4236 issues so I stuck a YMF724 pci card I had lying
around. Everything works now! .. except this card had a damnable amount of
noise and hum coming out of it :(
