I tried same thing before (via8233 - perhaps two months ago) and did not get it to 
work either,
there was no actual mpu support in the 8233 nor in the first 82xx driver.
I got midi working in a different machine with the ens1371 - you should try to use
the midi port on that...

One of my first midi experiments with soundcards (rather than roland's special midi 
board
with direct midi connectors) did not work as well, and that time I got into a 
debugging mood
and connected an oscilloscope to the signal wires at the joystick port. Now, pressing 
keys
on the keyboard generated pulses on that line of about 0.1 volts - far too low to be 
recognized.
I built my own midi-to-joystick cable using the opto part suggested in the midi 
standard,
and all was running fine
At least the shop that sold the soundcard and the cable said that it was a quality 
cable - and
with about 25 dollars it certainly had a high-quality price tag
