Hi,
my experience is, that Linux is very very complex and you will
never know everything.
Try first to get your Ideas realised with Linux, instead I see
the possibility that your Linux usage could end in itself and
you will get frustrated.
When you will learn more, I wouldn't start with compiling
progs, because every program needs other libs, variables and
so on. I'm using Linux for 4 years now as a desktop machine,
and I try to get ready to use binaries as often as possible.
I only compile when it is necessary.
When you will have a start in linux, I recommend that you buy
books. These are expensive, but you can sit down in the park
and have a look without sitting in front of a computer. And
when you have gotten an overview you will learn much faster
using your machine.
I have some highly recommendable books here, but these are in
german language.
That are my thoughts, maybe others will take an other way.
