Hi Luke,

Thank you very much for your help. I can get sound now, BUT whenever I startx I must use alsamixer to unmute "surround" channel and increase the volume. Is there a way around this.

I am using KDE disktop in Red Hat 8.0 Linux 2.4.18-14. I have tried saving seting with aumix but there is no "sorround" channel.

Thanks,
Robert Pastel

Hi Robert
From examining your modules list, you have sound enabled in the kernel and a module. I think the problem is this. The module i810_audio is the OSS module for your soundcard. I think the ALSA module is not loading because that is loaded.

Before making perminant changes, I suggest you try the following.
Remove the i810_audio and soundcore modules with the following commands.

$ rmmod i810_audio
$ rmmod soundcore

Then, ensuring you have your /etc/modules.conf file set up correctly, as suggested in the alsa-driver README file, load the alsa module.

$ modprobe snd-intel8x0

If the module loads with no problems, it is working. You can only have one module for a card loaded at a time.

In order to use your applications properly without changing too many settings, if any, I suggest you compile your ALSA drivers with the --with-oss=yes option, and unzip and install the alsa-oss-0.9rc8 package.

To ensure the alsa driver loads instead of the OSS driver, you would have to edit the start-up procedure for your system. I am not sure about RedHat 8, but I think there is a line in your modules.conf file that refers to the i810_audio module, as that is what happened when I installed RH 7.3 on another machine previously. Remove that line, and then copy the alsasound script from the alsa-driver package into your /etc/rc.d/init.d directory, and set it up to load on boot.

Hi Luke,

Thank you for your quick reply. I used the newest series alsa-driver-0.9.0rc8b, alsa-lib-0.9.0rc8c, and alsa-utils-0.9.0rc8a. I have not gotten as far as installing the tools or oss.

I configured the drivers with:
./configure --with-cards=all --with-sequencer=yes --with-kenerl=/usr/src/linux-2.4.18-14
so I did neither --with-oss=yes/no. Should I?

How do I enable sound in the kernel? Do you think that the general default settings of Red Hat 8.0 a problem?

BTW sound did work with KDE autodetect.

Hi Robert
I have exactly the same bord, and can compile and install the module for the chipset with no problems at all. I am running Slackware 8.1 with kernel 2.4.20 patched with low latency and pre-empt. I am currently using alsa-driver 0.9rc8b, alsa-lib 0.9rc8b, alsa-utils, alsa-oss and alsa-tools are 0.9rc8.

What series of drivers, libs, utils, and oss packages do you have? Have you enabled sound in your kernel as a module? What exactly did you configure your alsa drivers with, I.E --with-oss=yes/no etc?

Have I missed something? Should I be using a different driver?
