Have you tried 'modprobe snd-es18xx isapnp=1' to try looking for a 
plug-and-play version of the card? (Actually, looking at your commandline and 
your previous message, you may need snd_isapnp=1 as you're using an old beta 
version of ALSA 0.9.) According to the driver source (from ALSA 0.9.2), it 
appears that the ES1879 is a PnP card. The source also suggests that the 
driver is quite buggy. YMMV, as they say.
