Hello,

I have a problem getting spdif output on my on-board soundcard to run.

The board is a Gigabyte GA-7DX with a CT-5880 chip with Sigmatel AC97 codec.
The chip is revision D (aka. x03), so spdif should work smoothly.

I am using debian-unstable with official debian alsa packages and a custum
alsa-modules deb built via kernel-package.

Installation runs smoothly, The card gets detected as an es1371, the
snd-ens1371 modules is loaded correctly. analog audio works correctly.
Getting spdif to run is a trouble, though:

In alsamixer, I have a IEC958 control, but cannot edit it.
In amixer, I get the control as well, but only a "Mono Output" option is
available.
This option is set to off by default, resulting in spdif not activated (I can
see this on my amp, if no spdif signal is there, a certain LED is flashing,
if a valid signal is available, it is on continuously).

If i toggle this Option with
> amixer set IEC958,0 toglle

then I spdif gets activated, but almost no sound can be heard.
I only hear a sparkle of the sound that has to be played once in about 10
seconds or so (with varying time gaps). sometimes, it sounds quite distorted,
too.

With the normal stock kernel provided es1371 module, spdif is working smoothly
(after applying a small hack to the kernel, making revision x03 card working
with spdif).

What am I doing wrong? Please help if you have experience with such a
configuration.

regards
