Up till now I've been ignoring these posts about via82xx because I now have a Quattro for my laptop, but I have been experiencing trouble like this with the via82xx driver since 0.9.2, until I finally just had to give up on it. 0.9.1 worked, 0.9.2 completely froze my kernel, 0.9.3 gave me the exact errors described by Lavanya below. I thought I was doing something wrong, but apparently more people are having trouble. If someone could look into these problems it would be great. I'll be happy to post some extra info on my configuration if necessary. Just let me know what you need.

I've been having the same problem as in the previous post by Greg Akins, after installing ALSA 0.9.4 on my laptop with kernel 2.4.21-0.13mdk. My sound card is VIA VT82C686. The following command
modprobe snd-via82xx
gives me the error
/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: unresolved symbol snd_verbose_printk modprobe: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o failed modprobe: insmod snd-via82xx failed
I tried removing all previously installed drivers by typing in
rm -rf /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/misc/
as well as
modprobe -r via82cxxx_audio
After running alsaconf and then doing lsmod, the only sound-related module I see is soundcore. Here is my /etc/modules.conf file:
