Thanks for the tip. 

As you've probably worked out I'm not a coder but someone who has in a
rather ad-hoc way learnt linux to be able to use audio stuff. (this is
slowly changing work is organising to teach me Java for database
front-end stufff but that's another kettle of fish, but I guess not a a
bad place to start) 

I have noticed the --enable-optimize option does appear in many audio
apps though.. so I figure if it is included in as many areas as possible
those apps that do use it will benefit.
