Hi! I call uncle. I have reviewed web sites, and tried everything I can
think of. I need help.
I recently installed Redhat 9.0, and I have been trying to get my
built-in sound card to work ever since. Nothing but nothing that I have
done so far has given me even a peep. Absolutely nothing. I have gotten
the latest and greatest ALSA, and even upgraded my kernel to the very
latest, and still nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
David Logan
Here are the specifics:
AMD Duron 1GHz
528MB memory
KT3-AV motherboard with built-in AC97. The chip is labelled VT82C686B.
I have "Onboard sound" set to "Auto" in the BIOS.
Although probably not necessary, I also have "Enable Legacy Audio"
enabled, along with these parameters:
Sound Blaster Enabled
SB I/O Base Address 220H
SB IRQ Select IRQ5
SB DMA Select DMA1
MPU401 Enabled
MPU-401 I/O Address 330-333H
Game Port (200-207H) Enabled
OK. I have these:
alsa-driver-0.9.4
alsa-lib-0.9.4
alsa-utils-0.9.4
I compiled the drivers with:
./configure --with-cards=via82xx --with-sequencer=yes --with-oss=yes
--with-debug=full
I load the sound cards with these showing up in syslog:
Jun 22 11:14:43 server kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:07.5
Jun 22 11:14:44 server kernel: ALSA
../../alsa-kernel/pci/ac97/ac97_codec.c:2150: AC'97 0:0 analog
subsections not ready
An lsmod shows:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] src]# lsmod|egrep 'snd|sound|via'
snd-pcm-oss 54596 0 (autoclean)
snd-mixer-oss 18392 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss]

uname of my system:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] src]# uname -a
Linux server 2.4.21 #4 SMP Sun Jun 22 09:44:06 MDT 2003 i686 athlon i386

asound exists, with everything looking right. I won't post the contents
of everything in /proc/asound, but here is /proc/asound/cards:
0 [rev50 ]: VIA686A - VIA 82C686A/B rev50
VIA 82C686A/B rev50 at 0xdc00, irq 10
And it even looks like I'm getting interrupts. When I cat
/proc/interrupts, I get:
10: 59461 XT-PIC VIA686A
But still no sound.
