I have been trying to get my sound up for almost a week. I tried to follow
every instruction, read much of the documentation but the sound just won't
start.
Will really appreciate if someone can help me out.

1. I have the following soundcard (I also have a creative Sound blaster,
which I remioved from my system).
--SNIP--
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Audio (rev
01)
Subsystem: Dell Computer Corporation: Unknown device 0132
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr-
Stepping- SERR- FastB2B-
        Status: Cap+ 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort-
<TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR-
        Latency: 0
Interrupt: pin B routed to IRQ 3
        Region 0: I/O ports at e400 [size=256]
        Region 1: I/O ports at e080 [size=64]
        Region 2: Memory at ffaff800 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512]
        Region 3: Memory at ffaff400 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
        Capabilities: <available only to root>
--SNIP--

2. I have compiled and installed the alsa-driver
(./configure --with-isapnp=no --with-sequencer=yes --with-oss=yes --with-car
ds=ens1371,intel8x0 --with-debug=full ) , alsa-lib, alsa-tools, alsa-utils,
alsa-oss compatibilty (all are v 0.9.4).

3. I have placed the following lines in /etc/modules.conf
--SNIP--
# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0

alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

# card #0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
--SNIP--

Now when i reboot the machine, and unmute all the channels (using
alsamixer), I still don't get sound..
What am I doing wrong.. (I am not even getting any error messages in dmesg,
or /var/log/messages)

I will really appreciate, if someone can point out what I am doing wrong.
I will post more information if needed.

Shank
