I've been recently comparing sound quality between the ALSA emu10k1 driver and the SBLive drivers for windows, and I've noticed that the sound from the ALSA drivers has a lot of treble. Attempting to increase the bass only results in extreme distortion and popping noises. I also get similar distortion when moving the Master or PCM volumes near 100%.

After messing around with alsamixer, I've noticed that the PCM controls are visible only when music is playing, eg: EMU10K1 PCM Volume, PCM Send Volume, PCM Send Routing, etc (mentioned at http://opensrc.org/alsa/index.php?page=SbLiveMixer). By default, the two EMU10K1 PCM Volume controls are always at 100%, and they are reset to 100% whenever a program accesses the sound driver. If I change these two controls to 20%, and increase the regular PCM, Master, and Bass controls, the extra treble and "tin" sounds disappear, there are no distortion or pops, and everything sounds great. However, when I re-start XMMS, they reset to 100% and I almost go deaf as the speakers blast away at full volume. :)

So my question is: Is there anyway to permanently set the EMU10K1 PCM Volume control to anything other than 100% (no attenuation) without it constantly resetting? Or is this a symptom to some other problem?

I'm running this on a Gentoo 1.4 system with a SBLive 5.1 card.

Thanks for any help,

Jeffu
