The solution was simple: update to ALSA 0.9.6. Special thanks go to Anders Torger - he told that there was a bug in the 0.9.4! If I just had waited one month and started with version 0.9.6 ... I would spend only a minute to get ADAT capture working compared to these couple of weeks.

I suppose that many of you think the next problem is obvious:
arecord gives every now and then "xrun!!!" (buffer underrun??). With "nice -n -20 arecord..." the xrun!!! times get shorter but don't disappear. I tried different sized buffers with ecasound, but problem is still there. Then I found that the kernel source I have (2.4.20-19.9) has a "Low latency scheduling" option. If I compile a new kernel using that, should it help with those xrun!!!s ? Any other ideas? JACK?

...
if you ever find the right setup for Digi96/8, please mail me, I have the same problems, and I've given up, I just work with 2 channels/spdif now with this card. (shame on me).

Maybe you are beating your head against wall like me with ALSA 0.9.4 ?

Happy recording sessions to all!
