I have an IBM tp600 with the same chipset.
It took a lot of recompiles ( kernel and alsa )
to get it to work.

The two things that finally got it to work for me:
(I'm not sure which was the key , maybe both )

1) I recompiled my pcmcia-cs pacjage to include
   lspnp & setpnp support.
(It looks like you have that)

2) I used the latest -ac kernel because I was
under the impression that there was more support
   for pnp "stuff".

With these 2 steps complete, I used used lspnp to get
the correct parameters for the sound-chip.
(dma1, dma2, irq, ... a couple-more )

I then compiled alsa ( I think *without* pnp support
so I could set it myself) , and did the modprobe cs4236
with the apprpriate parameters set (from lspnp )

I remebre that I had to "fiddle" with those values.
To get the modprobe to finally take.

A couple more things , and then I'll sum it up ...

*Don't* trust the sound-chip parameters from a windows
environment.( if you dual-boot ) When I got lspnp to
work I did notice that the parameters were not the same
as they were under windows. (dma , irq, etc.)

I don't have the lap-top in front of me so I can't get
the specifics , but I would be happy to when I get home.

In closing if ( I realize I gave you a lot of subjective info)
you can start by getting lspnp to work correctly , then the
rest will follow.
